A Brief Encounter

An easy to stage one act comedy play with four scenes.

A lady and a gentleman meet in a lingerie shop.  A romantic chemistry between them develops as they decide which underwear to buy. Inspired by the 1945 film ‘Brief Encounter’

There are two versions of this script:

- a longer version that lasts about 45 minutes,

- a shorter version lasts about 15 minutes.

Cast List:

Laura - a lady customer

Alex - a gentleman customer

Myrtle - a sales assistant

Solicitor - a sympathetic and sensible lady solicitor

The role of Myrtle and the Solicitor can be played by the same actor (with a quick change)

Characters are very loosely based on those in the 1945 film ‘Brief Encounter’.  The dialogue is best spoken in clipped RP accents of the period although this is not essential.  The dialogue includes some deliberately modern references - the currency is modern and most of the styles of knickers would not be found in 1945, for example!

SCENE 1 - inside the lingerie shop. Chair and two stands displaying a selection of knickers.

SCENE 2 - Still inside the lingerie shop.

SCENE 3 - At the solicitor’s office. Desk and two chairs.

SCENE 4 - Inside the lingerie shop.

(the play can also be performed with no set at all and minimal props)
